The resilient elastic underlay is increasingly important in the proper functioning of a flooring system.
A floor can only demonstrate its qualities when also the Underlay as part of the flooring system works optimally. The base forms the interface between the laminated floor and the floor covering.
An appropriate base ensures in a sustainable way the functionality and complete protection of the flooring system in daily use (e.g. when walking or when objects are falling). It can also protect the floor from rising damp. On the other hand it optimizes the properties, such as the reduction of the noise of impact and of tread, the base has a fundamental influence in the thermal properties and in the comfort when walking.
It has moved from being a material of „commodity“ and the typical “ foam“ to become the support of the floor; what we mean by this, a good resilient base will provide properties to the floor that would have never been achieved by the floor itself.
Now comes the question: What properties should an elastic underlay have?
An elastic underlay must have the following characteristics:
- Improving the impact sound insulation (IS)
- Minimal improvement of 18 dB (ΔLw)
- Reduction of the drum sound (also called reflected walking sound) within the own enclosure (RWS- Reflected walking sound)
- Minimal reduction of 20%
- Dimensional stability
- Density
- Always greater than 500 kg/m3
- Contribution to airborne sound insulation
- Protection and resistance to mechanical pressure (DL, CC, CS)
- Protection against unevenness (PC)
- Protection against humidity (SD)
- Underfloor heating and cooling (Rʎ,B)
- Thermal insulation (Rʎ)
The challenge is to combine all these properties in one element. On the one hand, if we want to improve the impact noise insulation, we must generate a more flexible material with more polymers, which results in lowering the RWS, CS, DD and DL.
On the other hand, if we want to improve the RWS, we must increase the density which will affect all the mechanical factors, but it will dramatically worsen the impact sound insulation.
